What morphological characteristics of the following cell types will help the technologist differentiate them?
a. Mesothelial cells
b. Adenocarcinoma
c. Leukemic blasts
d. Small-cell carcinoma
What will be an ideal response?
Answer:
Mesothelial cell: large cells with homogeneous, smooth-appearing chromatin, no nucleoli present, usually individual; can be individualized or in clumps. Can also be multinucleated and/or reactive.
Adenocarcinoma: large-to-giant cell, heterogeneous partially clumped chromatin, jagged nuclear membrane, usually clumped with other cells.
Leukemic blasts: open, lacelike chromatin pattern, small to moderate in size, with nucleoli, slightly basophilic cytoplasm, and smooth nuclear membrane.
Small-cell carcinoma: moderate to large in size, homogeneous chromatin with a slightly coarse appearance, no nucleoli present, irregular, jagged nuclear membrane, usually in clumps with other cells.
