Between 1950 and 1990, the number of women who worked outside the home climbed each year. The number of one-earner households declined rapidly, from over 50 percent to less than 25 percent; the percentage of women aged twenty-five to thirty-four who worked outside the home doubled, from 35 percent in 1950 to over 70 percent in 1990; and for the first time the number of children with mothers who

worked exceeded the number of children with mothers at home. In 1950, 12 percent of all women with children under the age of six were in the labor force; in 1990, 57 percent of all such mothers worked outside the home. By 1990, more than 56 million American women worked, making up 45 percent of the work force, compared with 38 percent in 1970 . By the year 2000, women were expected to represent almost half of the labor force.
