What are deaths of despair? How have they impacted life expectancy in recent years?
What will be an ideal response?
Drug overdoses, alcohol related deaths, and suicide rates are deaths of despair. Deaths of despair began their rise during the 1990s, but their increase was offset by decreases in other causes of mortality. As the decline in mortality from other cases slowed, continuing increases in deaths of despair increased the overall mortality rates—off-setting decreases for children and the elderly from cancer and heart disease. Life expectancy at birth decline between 2013 and 2014 and overall life expectancy declined between 2014 and 2015
