A patient was in an automobile accident and sustained severe crushing injuries and fractures in her right foot. She developed compartment syndrome. Describe compartment syndrome and how this condition could lead to a loss of the use of her foot?
What will be an ideal response?
The fascia around the muscle acts like a compartment. When significant amounts of blood build up, the tissues are compressed. If this pressure is not relieved, nerve and blood vessel damage occurs with loss of function of the foot.
