What is the immune function of the placenta in human and marsupial embryo development?

What will be an ideal response?

Since the placenta prevents fetal blood from entering the maternal bloodstream, the mother's immune
system does not sense the presence of a foreign substance in the body. In marsupials, such as the
kangaroo, there is no placenta so the fetus is expelled from the mother's body before development is
complete. The young kangaroo then must complete his development in an external pouch.
