Years later, Dr, Chain, a chemist, read Dr. Fleming’s paper and decided to perform
experiments to fi nd out why fungal growth inhibited bacterial growth. He isolated the
penicillin compound. As a result of World War II, the English and American governments
fi nanced a team of English and American scientists for the purpose of determining how to
mass produce penicillin. This was the fi rst example of mass production of an antibiotic.
