Describe how teachers can use milieu teaching to improve the communication skills of children with ASD.
What will be an ideal response?
Milieu teaching involves adult-child interactions that occur during natural, unstructured times to help develop communication skills.Routine activities such as playing, eating, and dressing provide the perfect opportunity to embed learning activities into early childhood settings. When we embed learning opportunities into everyday routines and environments, we call them naturalistic interventions.Such techniques are based on the principles of applied behavior analysis, used to increase language through guided support (i.e., prompting) and reinforcement (using favored items to increase the desired behavior) in everyday environments that follow the child’s lead.Milieu teaching is considered a naturalistic model that uses child interest as opportunities to model and prompt language in everyday contexts. It involves arranging the environment in ways that increase the likelihood that the child will communicate; selecting and teaching specific skills that are appropriate to the child’s developmental level; responding to the child’s initiations with prompts for elaborated language; and reinforcing the child’s communicative attempts by providing access to requested objects, with continued adult interaction and feedback. There is evidence that this kind of teaching increases the use of social communicative use of language in children with disabilities.
