Digraphs are a spelling challenge to young writers because there are little or no phonemic cues as to what letters to use. For example, in the word phone, the letter p and the letter h are combined to create the sound /f/. Neither letter has a sound similar to the way in which the letters are combined to create the /f/ sound. This is confusing to children when they are beginning to spell words that have digraphs.
