How should Mr. Van Holten evaluate his students' papers?
What will be an ideal response?
Because Mr. Van Holten has not identified specific criteria in advance, he is going to have a difficult time evaluating them in a consistent, reliable fashion. He should probably limit his grading criteria to those that have been implicitly clear from the start (the paper must be at least ten pages long, it must incorporate information obtained from the library, each paragraph should have a topic sentence and one or more supporting sentences, etc.). At the same time, he should provide feedback regarding other errors that students have made
