What is the equality rule? How, why, and when is it taught?

The equality rules is: We must end with the same number on this side and the other side of the equal sign. The equality rule must be mastered before students are taught to solve simple addition problems with concrete or semi-concrete objects in the beginning stage of addition instruction because equality is a prerequisite for more complex exercises.
Equality can be taught be presenting the equality rule and a series of positive and negative examples. Initially, the teacher introduces the equal sign and the equality rule. Next, the teacher demonstrates applying the equality rule to examples of semi-concrete objects in which the sides are equal and examples in which the sides are not equal. Finally, the students complete worksheet exercises in which they apply the equality rule to examples of semi-concrete objects in which the sides are equal and examples in which the sides are not equal.
