What is the general food timeline for a child in the first two years?
What will be an ideal response?
For the first 4 to 6 months, infants gain all the nutrition they need from breast milk or
formula. Even though babies can eat solid foods beginning at around 4 to 6 months of
age, they will still get most of their calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals from breast
milk or formula. The first solid food introduced is generally an iron-fortified infant
cereal. From 6 to 8 months, pureed or mashed fruits and vegetables are added to the
child's diet. New foods should be added one at a time to check for any food allergies
that may occur. From 7 to 10 month of age, infants can feed themselves finger foods
such as dry cereal. During this time, other foods are offered, usually in the sequence of
meat, fish, and then eggs. Soft textures are offered from 8 to 12 months of age,
progressing on to chunkier textures and more solid foods as the child ages. From age 1
to 2, children continue to develop their eating skills.
