How do you account for the significant African influence on Latin music?

What will be an ideal response?

The slave trade bringing blacks to North America carried many slaves to the Caribbean islands and Brazil. Traditional drumming, largely forbidden in the North, was tolerated here and helped slaves to preserve their cultural traditions. African tribal religions blended more easily with Christian Catholicism prevalent in Latin America than with the Protestantism characteristic of the North.
