Students should discuss how urbanization occurred rapidly in the 1800s and continues today. With urbanization comes diversification and many societies must grabble with integration, equality, and changing social norms. Students should make the connection that with these changes came a piqued interest in how the social world works and the implications social structure has on life chances (sociological thinking). Students should provide details from the text on social changes that occurred using specifics from theorists discussed (Tonnies, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, Marx, etc.) Some discussion of what early sociologists studied and what they concluded should be provided.
