What will be an ideal response?
These “post” theories radically oppose many of the established understandings of sociology and call for social thinkers to interpret the world in new, and often startling, ways. Indeed, they attack the ability of sociology to develop claims to the truth of social reality, as well as the very idea of the “social” upon which sociology is based. These common themes (to be discussed shortly) include the fragmentation of meaning, the localization of politics, the decline of the idea of Truth, and the decentering of the subject. Postmodernism questions the adequacy of the designation “modern” with reference to contemporary societies, engaging in debates on the importance and sense of the changes in the surrounding world. In very general terms, “postmodernism” points to a basic skepticism about the methods, goals, and ideals of modern society.
