Using a traditional publisher gives the author the additional authority of the publisher's imprimatur, as well as assistance in editing, marketing, and distributing the book. Traditional publishers, however, require a formal proposal and have a lengthy vetting process that ultimately rejects more proposals than it accepts. Self-published and electronically published books, on the
other hand, don't have the constraints of materials published by a publishing house do, but
they also lack the market endorsement and support that comes with such a partnership. Sometimes, however, the freedom to publish something on your own time that addresses the concerns of a very specific audience can be a strong MPR tool. Additionally, the stigma attached to self-publishing is beginning to fade. People who want to establish themselves as experts in their field are good candidates for self-publishing and a successfully self-published work can get the attention of publishers by demonstrating that the author has established himself or herself with an audience and is willing to do the marketing.
