Describe and explain the green revolution, and explain the problems with it. Explain the extent to which you think this revolution is beneficial or not in light of its problems. Propose potential solutions that you may have to the problems of global food shortages and world hunger.
What will be an ideal response?
• The green revolution refers to dramatic increases in agricultural production that have been made possible by the development of agricultural technologies and high-yield “miracle” crops such as wheat and rice
• Following the enormous success of the green revolution, the rate of increase of agricultural production slowed considerably.
• One reason may be cost: The fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation systems that are needed to produce crops are very expensive and beyond the budgets of most middle- and low-income nations
• Another reason may be the impact of these high-yield inputs on the environment: These fertilizers and pesticides may become a source of surface water and groundwater pollution
• Even with these drawbacks, however, the green revolution continues. Researchers have developed high-yield sorghum, yams, and other crops that can be grown successfully in the nations of Africa where some of the greatest food shortages exist
