Explain the difference between diffusion and facilitated diffusion.

Both diffusion and facilitated diffusion are examples of passive transport across the cell membrane. That is, neither process requires energy from the cell. This is because both diffusion and facilitated diffusion move molecules down their concentration gradients, from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. Diffusion and facilitated diffusion differ in how this transport occurs. In diffusion, molecules move directly across the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane. However, not all molecules are able to cross the phospholipid bilayer directly this way. In facilitated diffusion, a membrane protein called a transport protein provides a gate through which molecules can move across the cell membrane.
