Newcomers see opportunities but also experience fear, uncertainty, and unhappiness. While the majority of refugee teenagers are well-adjusted and do well in school, a significant number become involved in gang criminal behavior. For elderly refugees, minimal or nonexistent English language skills result in social isolation. Rural refugees are often less sophisticated than urban counterparts and do not fare well in a capitalistic society, although their children progress economically and socially.
