Examine effective strategies for using time-out in the classroom.

What will be an ideal response?

In using time-out, teachers should consider the following: (a) keep the student in the classroom, but deny the student access to positive reinforcement; (b) the setting from which the student is removed has to be positively reinforcing, and the setting in which the student is placed has to not be positively reinforcing; (c) identify the student's behaviors that resulted in time-out; (d) positively reinforce the student's positive behavior when he or she is not in time-out; and (e) keep records of each time-out session, especially if a time-out room is used, so that time-out usage is effective and ethical.
