Go online and research “Vermont gasifier” at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Web site. Write a paragraph on how it was developed and who developed it. Include the significance of its development and why it is an R&D 100 Award-winning gasification system.

What will be an ideal response?

As stated in the “Project Update on the Vermont Gasifier,” it was

developed by partnership between the Burlington Electric Department

(host), the U.S. Department of Energy, Battelle, NREL and Future Energy

Resources Corporation (FERCO) for the purpose of verifying the design and

operation of an intermediate-sized gasifier, a plant that can use biomass

to generate energy. As visualized in Figure below, the gasifier works by

combusting wood chips with hot sand to produce biogas, which can be

used as an energy source.

Since this gasifi er does not require pure oxygen, it costs much less to build

and operate than other gasifi ers. Steam replaces oxygen. It also processes

biomass more quickly and it works under low-pressure compared to

other ones.
