Good answers will point out an advantage of the DSM system is that it makes it easier for doctors and clinicians to communicate about the disorder a patient has and provides method for consistency in diagnosis since it gives a universally accepted explanation of any given disorder. Disadvantages that could be discussed include the difficulty in assigning people into discrete, nonoverlapping diagnostic categories since the symptom overlap across many disorders is enormous, and the potential problems with the large and ever-expanding array of behaviors that are classified as abnormal.
