Explain the role of distance in general in Georg Simmel’s theory. Highlight the role of the stranger in your response. Then identify and accurately describe someone in your own life who reflects Georg Simmel’s stranger or is distant yet still belongs to a group you are a part of. Describe the interactions this stranger is privy to.

What will be an ideal response?

• Simmel explored distance in terms of value and interaction. He claimed that the things that are valuable to us are typically farther from us. Simmel also talked about interaction and distance, enlisting the role of the stranger.
• Strangers are close enough to have contact with a group but still distant enough that relationships are objective and patterned; for example, when strangers are trusted with confidences because they are close enough to understand, but remote enough not to be a threat.
Students will include their own answers about a stranger who fits Simmel’s category.
