Are behavior theories holistic? Explain.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: In its original conception, behavior theorists focused much more on the deterministic role of the environment in shaping human behavior and did not view humans as having free will or as able to reason, act upon and creatively change their environments. This original conception is one-sided, views human beings as androids, and lacks a holistic emphasis on the combined and mutual interactions that occur between people and their environments. However, this purer, traditional behavior theory quickly gave way to a cognitive turn (see Bandura’s writings) which acknowledge humans’ capacities for thinking, reflecting and engaging in observations of others’ behaviors as a way to influence their own behavior. All behavioral therapies are individually-focused and continue to be critiqued for the directive or leading role of the therapist regarding what behaviors should be accepted, targeted and/or changed (Rogers & Skinner, 1956). Further, behavior therapies place little emphasis on the impact that human can have on impacting or changing their environments.
