We do not know absolutely what causes AD. Scientists believe that for most people, AD results from
a combination of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that affect the brain over time. AD is
not a normal part of aging, but aging is the most important risk factor for developing AD. Although
there is a familial AD, scientists have also linked the disease to many different possibilities (viruses;
autoimmune disease; and deficiencies of neurotransmitters, such as acetylcholine, somatostatin,
substance P, and norepinephrine).
