What led to the development of DAP guidelines?
What will be an ideal response?
The Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) guidelines initially began as a reaction to fears that there was too much emphasis on academic demands and expectations of young children in preschool and early primary programs. Parents and educators were worried that academic preparedness was taking away from the need (or ability) to provide children with sufficient opportunities to engage in play-based activities and other less structured activities. It was believed that young children needed some unstructured play time in order to learn, rather than a strong focus on academics only.
