In the Toyota hybrid system (THS), hybrid motor/generators operate as motors when they power a vehicle. They can also generate electricity to recharge the battery pack.  Describe the functions of Motor/Generator 1 and Motor/Generator 2.

What will be an ideal response?

Motor/Generator 1. MG1 is splined to the sun gear. It controls the transaxle gear ratio and provides a starter for the internal combustion engine. It also generates electricity and gives a small amount of acceleration assist, especially when the internal combustion engine is off.

Motor/Generator 2. When starting from a stop, power is supplied solely by the main electric motor,  MG2. MG2 is splined to the planetary ring gear, and thus the final drive. It is used to propel the vehicle all of the time and also generates electricity when the vehicle decelerates.
During this regenerative braking process, MG2 is the main brake source, and each wheel is modulated by the computer system's brake-by-wire system.
