Identify the information you would seek and the issues you would address as you consult with your
supervisor before taking any action concerning Mrs. Anderson in the following situation.
Case Situation: You work in an agency serving an elderly population in the community. On Tuesday morning, a
woman telephoned the agency and talked with you about her neighbor, Mrs. Anderson. According to the caller, Mrs.
Anderson is 82 years old and lives by herself in an apartment. The caller reported that Mrs. Anderson has not left her
apartment in three days and would not answer her door or telephone. The neighbor did say, however, that she could
hear movement in the apartment.
Immediately following the phone call, you examined agency files and discovered that Mrs. Anderson had
not previously received agency services.
What will be an ideal response?
ANS: Students' answers will vary. The skill of preparatory consultation may be used in two primary ways. The first
involves seeking advice from a social work supervisor or professional colleagues within your agency concerning an
upcoming visit with a prospective client or other constituents. The second involves consultation with experts or
examination of published material related to a topic that appears relevant to a forthcoming meeting.
When engaging in preparatory consultation with agency-based colleagues, you may usually be fairly open
about details that pertain to an upcoming meeting. Your supervisors and other members of your service program or
unit are just as responsible for protecting the privacy and confidentiality rights of your clients as you are of theirs.
When consulting with outside experts, however, social workers must be more circumspect and seek information in
ways that do not compromise clients' rights. For example, suppose you are about to meet with a new client who
mentioned during the initial telephone contact that she is an undocumented immigrant and expects to be deported
within the next few weeks. However, her children are U.S. citizens and she wants them to remain in this country.
She seeks your help in exploring options and locating the best available care of her children during her absence. She
anticipates being away for at least 1 year and perhaps many more.
