The punishment ideology is the belief that offenders must receive some kind of retribution or punishment for their crimes. The rehabilitation ideology holds that offenders commit crimes because they are disadvantaged in a particular area and thus must be diagnosed and treated in order to stop the criminal behavior. The prevention ideology attempts to prevent criminal behavior by proactive means, in order to prevent crimes from occurring in the first place.
