- Culture influences the issues people fight about. Collectivist cultures view conflict more as it relates to violations of larger group norms or values, such as in failing in your role or overstepping social status. In individualistic cultures, conflicts are more likely when people violate expected norms-for example, not defending a position in the face of disagreement.
- Culture also affects what approaches to conflict are considered appropriate and inappropriate. Cultures teach individuals about conflict and its management by endorsing certain strategies and negatively evaluating others, sometimes based on situation or gender.
