What is the concept behind open source software? What are its pros and cons?

What will be an ideal response?

Answers will vary. Linux was released to the public as open source software, which is a program whose source code is available to the public and may be modified to improve it or customize it. One reason individuals and organizations switch to Linux and other open source software is cost. Using the Linux operating system and a free or low-cost office suite, Web browser program, and email program can save hundreds of dollars per computer. Another reason is that Linux allows users to customize the user interface and directly control the computer much more than is possible with Windows and OS X.An open source program can be copyrighted, but individuals and businesses are allowed to modify the program and redistribute it-the only restrictions are that changes must be shared with the open source community and the original copyright notice must remain intact. Please see the section ''Operating Systems'' for more information.
