Compare and contrast assimilation and accommodation, and explain how they work together in the process of achieving equilibrium for a particular skill. Provide an example of each.
What will be an ideal response?
The ideal answer should include:
1. Assimilation is the process of interpreting experiences in terms of existing schemes, such as when an infant grasps a long metal spoon using the hand grip she usually uses for her short plastic spoon.
2. Accommodation is the process of adapting existing schemes to fit new experiences. For example, the infant may gradually alter her method of holding the long metal spoon to adjust to its greater weight and length.
3. Infants continue to accommodate their schemes until they have achieved mastery and can easily assimilate the new experience. For example, the infant will continually adjust her grip on the metal spoon until she can hold it and manipulate it firmly.
