What is coercive power? Why is it not considered a form of leadership?
What will be an ideal response?
Coercive power is, in some way, forcing followers to do something, often by introducing punishment or reprimand (such as reduced salary or worse job assignments) for failure to perform. It does not establish trust, build relationships, or develop connections between the leader and followers. It can often result in fear, and lead to resistance and/or feelings of helplessness. In many ways, it is the antithesis of what leadership is all about. Which is not to say that it should never be used. It could have its place, but it should be used sparingly, especially in relation to the other forms of power.
