The NASW Code of Ethics emphasizes the importance of human relationships. With computers and other media being so prevalent in American life, do you think there is perhaps less need for human relationships compared to 25, 50, or 100 years ago? If so, what are the implications for social work practice?
What will be an ideal response?
It is unlikely that students will think that the importance of human relationships is any less critical than it ever was, but they may correctly observe that relationships can be experienced in new ways, some of which do not involve much, or any, physical contact. These newer settings for developing and maintaining relationships include the computer (Facebook, AOL, etc) and other relationship “settings” that include limited portions of a person’s total personality, such as clubs, hobbies, work, and other topics-focused organizations.
