Ma’at is a fundamental feature of African approaches to mental health and to each other as individuals. The philosophy of Ma’at serves a similar role for Africans as Buddhism does for Asians. The goddess Ma’at was part of the ancient Egyptian/Kemetic system of spirituality. She was the female balance to the male god Tehuti. The declarations of Ma’at formed a moral code for the living, and they served as the standard by which the dead would be judged. The Kemites believed that when a person died, his or her heart would be weighed against the Ma’at principles of truth, justice, and righteousness (Karenga, 1994). After the heart was weighed, it would be judged whether the person’s soul would receive a heavenly reward or not. Ma’at is the divine order that sustains the universe and society. The virtues of Ma’at are truth, righteousness, harmony, balance, reciprocity, justice, and order. People are expected to abide by their ancestors’ traditions (Diallo & Hall, 1989). The head of the family is supposed to keep watch over its members so that they do not offend members of the invisible community of ancestors. The family unites to chase off evil spirits. When a member of a family falls sick, the head of the family seeks to discover why an ancestor is displeased with the person’s behavior. If the family member is unable to resolve the situation and to restore the sick member’s health, he consults an indigenous doctor or healing person.
