Teachers should be cautious in assuming that errors are caused by a lack of motivation. Sometimes students seem as though they are not trying when, in fact, they do not know what to do or lack prerequisite skills.
To determine whether motivation is contributing to poor performance, a teacher can put in place some special big rewards for good performance on assignments for several days. If a student who has done poorly on similar assignments does well when a big reward is offered, lack of motivation may be a reason for prior poor performance. If students do not respond to increased motivation, the teacher should investigate whether specific skill or knowledge problems are causing students to struggle.
