Compare and contrast stratified random sampling and quota sampling.
What will be an ideal response?
Ans: Varies.
Stratified random sampling is a type of probability sampling. Researchers identify a specific characteristic by which all members of the population can be categorized. Elements are then randomly sampled from these strata. Quota sampling is a type of nonprobability sampling. The researcher chooses to sample a certain number of individuals who have a particular level of a characteristic (similar to a strata), in proportion to its prevalence in the broader population. Quota sampling, however, is not done randomly. Additionally, stratified sampling requires a sampling frame and is an unbiased, or random, selection method. As mentioned, quota sampling is not random, but like stratified, it ensures that there is representation in the sample by each level of the characteristic of interest (the strata).
