Write a short note on the job evaluation process.

What will be an ideal response?

A number of job evaluation methods are available. Their purpose is to provide a work-related and business-related rationale to support decisions about pay. All of the methods also have the same final objective: to rank jobs in terms of their relative worth to the organization, so that an equitable rate of pay can be determined for each job. However, different job evaluation methods yield different rank-orders of jobs, and therefore different pay structures. In short, method matters. Although job evaluation provides a business-related order and logic that supports pay differences among jobs, not all firms use it. One reason is that several policy issues must be resolved first, including the following:

1. Does management perceive meaningful differences among jobs?
2. Is it possible to identify criteria for making distinctions among jobs?
3. Will job evaluation result in meaningful distinctions in the eyes of employees?
4. Are jobs stable, and will they remain stable in the future?
5. Is job evaluation consistent with the organization's goals and strategies?
