There are four main types of prisons in France. The most secure is the maison centrale (central house), which is the equivalent to the British Category A prison. The next is the centre de detention (detention center) housing both medium and minimum risk offenders. The centre de semi-liberte (semi-release center) and centre pour peines amenagees, (temporary detention centers), which enable prisoners to maintain their employment outside of the facility and are analogous to American work release centers. Finally, there is the masison d’arret, which is the equivalent of an American jail or British remand center.
