Guidelines for improving students' problem-solving abilities include: (1) Present problems in real-world contexts, and provide practice in identifying problem goals, such as having students solve word problems that relate to common factors in students' lives, such as cell phone rates. (2) Develop students' expertise with deliberate practice and worked examples, such as David Chin's efforts on pages 330 and 331 of the chapter. (3) Capitalize on social interaction to engage students and monitor their learning progress, such as having students work in groups and conducting whole-class discussions of their problem solving efforts.
