What is the role of the client in strengths-based counseling?

What will be an ideal response?

The strengths-based approach to counseling endorses a client bill of rights. These rights emphasize how a client is to be treated during the therapeutic encounter. Conversely, the client also has responsibilities, and he or she must commit to accepting partial responsibility for getting well or for solving difficult issues. The role of the client is to agree to actively participate in the therapeutic process, to adopt a framework of hope, to subscribe to the belief that change is possible for him or her, and that his or her individual strengths are key elements in getting well, recovering, or achieving goals in life. The client must disavow a “victim mentality” and agree to not only search for his or her strengths but also to use them to recover from psychological challenges. Where appropriate, the client agrees to participate in homework assignments related to strength development and other matters.
