What was the original New Deal policy that many think of when they think “welfare”? What were some criticisms of that policy? Which policy was adopted in its place?

What will be an ideal response?

Ans: The original welfare policy implemented during the New Deal was called Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC). The AFDC program was criticized for many reasons, including the fact that it did not have any work requirements, there was no limit for how long people could receive the benefits, and many Americans believed that welfare recipients were unwilling to work. In 1996, a new policy known as Temporary Assistance to Needy Families replaced AFDC.
