Phonemic awareness is a subcategory of phonological awareness that is focused more narrowly on the identification and manipulation of individual sounds within words. Phonemic awareness includes both an awareness that spoken words are composed of tiny, abstract sounds and the ability to manipulate those sounds in a variety of ways.
