Many of the less developed world's people have come to have "rising expectations." How did this process unfold? Are these expectations likely to be fulfilled? Why or why not? Choose one of the following topics to discuss in detail: (1) literacy rates; (2) energy consumption; (3) food and hunger.

What will be an ideal response?

The ideal answer should include:
1. This process of rising expectations began in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when many LDCs gained independence from the former colonial powers.
2. Governments embark on campaigns for favorable terms of trade and direct aid from developed nations.
3. Money invested in education, health care, transportation, and communication.
4. In LDCs there is a wide gap between the standard of living and the level of living.
5. Literacy rates: Data from Table 13-2; increasing literacy; gap between men and women; education of girls lags behind.
6. Energy consumption: Data from Tables 13-3 and 13.4; despite the increase in oil consumption in LDCs and the decline in developed countries, the imbalance in its use remains striking; U.S. use of oil high but declining; China emits twice the carbon, but has five times the population as the United States.
7. The UN estimates that 815 million people in the world today do not get enough food to eat to lead a healthy and active life. Reasons: lack money, little investment in agricultural infrastructure, climate, war and conflicts, food prices unstable.
