Describe and discuss the formation of the Proterozoic Banded Iron Formations (BIFs). What are they composed of?

Why are these BIFs economically important? What will be an ideal response?

BIFs are composed of the iron oxide minerals hematite and magnetite interbedded with
alternating layers of chert. The increasing oxygen contained in Earth’s atmosphere caused
precipitation of these iron oxides from seawater. BIFs are important sources of iron for
industrial purposes.
