Why is it important for courts and probation agencies to provide the right level of supervision and conditions for probationers? Give two examples of what can happen if the right level is not set.

What will be an ideal response?

If probation is too lenient, the probationer may not view his or her probation as a serious matter. Also, the public might claim that the probationer has not been held accountable for his or her crimes. For example, if a person is convicted of assault with a deadly weapon, but is given little supervision and lenient conditions, then this person might think his or her crime was not that serious and become a repeat offender.
On the other hand, too many requirements can make the probationer frustrated and give him or her a sense of futility. Such a condition can also lead to violations and probation failures. For example, a person is convicted of first-time drug possession and is given very strict probation conditions, which are difficult to adhere to. The person might feel that such conditions are unreasonable and too difficult to uphold. As a result, the person gets frustrated and commits another crime.
