Explain the cause of shingles

Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the same herpes virus that causes chickenpox. Once reactivated, the virus stimulates painful inflammation of the nerve ganglia and causes skin eruptions in a pattern that corresponds to the affected dermatome.
