Explain the female athlete triad.
What will be an ideal response?
The female athlete triad occurs when a female exercises excessively while consuming too few calories in pursuit of a low weight or body size. The three interrelated conditions that make up the triad are low energy availability (often due to an eating disorder), menstrual dysfunction, and premature osteoporosis (due to decreased bone-mineral density). Any female whose menstrual cycles are more than 35 days apart or who misses three menstrual cycles should be evaluated by a physician.
