In a brief essay, compare and contrast the media industries of the United States with those of Canada and Western Europe. How are they similar? How are they different?
What will be an ideal response?
They are similar in that all of these countries have relatively free speech and have print media run by private industry. They are democracies that depend on information from a free press in order to function. They are different in that the United States has the world’s largest media industry. Canada, France, and other countries in Western Europe worry about their media industries being overwhelmed by American content. Western Europe has more of a tradition of a partisan press. In much of Europe, there is a stronger public ownership of the broadcast airwaves, though private broadcasting is growing.
