Explain what a mutator gene is and give an example

A mutator gene is a gene in which a mutation results in a much higher-than-normal mutation frequency for all other genes. For example, mutD mutations in E. coli affect the function of DNA polymerase III. This causes defective 3'-to-5' proofreading repair activity and results in many incorrectly inserted nucleotides being left unrepaired.
