Discuss the implications of using computers in career counseling

What will be an ideal response?

• There are many concerns when using computers in career counseling, one concern being confidentiality. There are many abuses that come with the confidentiality of using computers in career counseling and are more likely to be abused with electronic data storage systems than with traditional approaches Lynch (1991) maintains that many of these problems can be solved with identification codes, passwords, and general restrictions.
• Using the Internet provides a potential for violation of confidentiality and is increased
through inappropriate access to client records, e-mail correspondence, client case notes, and client assessment information.
• Other fears among some career counseling professionals are that computerized systems will be the sole source of career guidance programming. The career counselor must also be prepared to address the problem of user anxiety; this can cause inadequately prepared users to become easily discouraged with computerized systems.
